The key findings of the new study on UK online casino gambling show that 8.8 percent of the 8000 adults surveyed said they had participated in at least one form of remote gambling in the previous month. The majority of these online casino gamblers turned out to be male rather than female, and aged 18-34. However, the survey also shows that if the hugely popular National Lottery is excluded, the percentage of UK online casino gamblers is reduced to a mere 5.1 %.

As Internet gambling has boomed from a $6 billion industry in 2003 to the more than $20 billion expected this year, according to the Maine-based research firm Christiansen Capital Advisors, Betfair’s revenue has grown to $372 million, from $64 million in 2003. Last year, by taking 2 percent to 5 percent commissions on winning bets, Betfair posted profits of $64 million, according to its annual report.
